This internship will serve Kindergarden through 7th graders at the Tempe YMCA with direct service to a low-income population in Tempe Arizona from the Tempe and Kyrene School District. The students are participants in the YMCA before and or afterschool program.
This internship meets a community need of positive out-of-school opportunties for youth. It is proven the majority of crimes and community issues with youth occur between the afterschool hours of 3-6pm. Engaging youth in quality programs during this time increases community safety and wellness, while equipping youth for higher achievement academically and socially.
This internship will make a impact on academic achievement and opportunity for all populations. Communities need quality afterschool programs that support education and opportunity for all youth to ensure closing the achievement gapand equipping youth for success. The YMCA is working to create afterschool programs that support youth development in meaningful ways and give youth the opportunity for achievement, regardless of socioeconomic factors.
