About the InternshipDuties:
Service-learning volunteers will work with a specific grade level or subject matter to work with at risk students and help them improve academically and socially. The focus of how to assist those developing students will be determined by our ASU volunteers and the Laveen students.
Laveen Elementary serves students from all needs and backgrounds. In addition to having kinder through eighth grade, we are very unique by having self-contained life skills rooms and special needs preschool. We have teachers working with our Gifted population, English language learners, and Native Americans.
This is a Title 1 school. We are working on our school goal of ensuring every child has personal growth and develops as a learner.
We are a Leader In Me School who focus on the 7 Habits of Happy Kids. Habit one:Be proactive. Habit two: Begin with the end in mind. Habit three: Put first things first. Habit four: Think win-win. Habit five: Seek first to understand. Habit six: Synergize. Habit seven: Sharpen the saw.
Laveen is lucky to community members serve as mentors for the kids. The mentors meet with students once a week or biweekly to help build up the student's self esteem, academic or behavioral needs, and/or serve as a positive role model for the students.
Laveen elementary takes part in community events such as the parade, festivals, curriculum nights, and other evening events for families.
