About the InternshipDuties:
Help implement conservation programming in under-resourced communities for elementary through high school youth. Choose from afterschool, school field trip, and teen programs. Audubon Arizona is focused on protecting birds and their habitats through the following 3 youth programs:
Motivated, energetic assistants help teach our elementary-age field trip program, Nature In Your Neighborhood. Audubon Arizona’s environmental education experiences serve primarily inner-city children grades K-8 and focus on the Salt River ecosystem. Study topics include Rio Salado birds, water quality and native animals. Education Assistants will help with preparations for the programs and will deliver lessons to visiting groups.
Specific Duties Include:
- Teaching our Nature In Your Neighborhood Field Trip Program
- Helping market our education programs at various expos/events/fairs
- Help prepare and staff our Spring events
- Assist with our high school education program as needed
You will, after training, be able to enthusiastically and knowledgeably teach students about the natural history of the Sonoran desert. Audubon Arizona will provide one training session (2-3 hours) prior to the program. This is an excellent opportunity for those interested in teaching science in a non-traditional setting and to diverse audiences.
EDUCATION PROGRAM MANAGEMENT ASSISTANT
Motivated, energetic assistant will manage and teach our afterschool program, River Keepers,serving under-privileged youth 2nd-6th grades. Topics covered include Rio Salado birds, water quality, mammals, and reptiles. You will receive experience in all aspects of educational program management: marketing, curriculum development, teaching and program evaluations.
Audubon Arizona will provide training on Sonoran desert flora and fauna. This is an excellent opportunity for those interested in organizing, managing and teaching educational programs in a non-traditional setting for diverse audiences.
Our education programs serve primarily underprivileged families within the South Phoenix community, as well as schools from local areas/districts.
In America, teenagers spend about 27% of their time interfacing with electronic media and only about 1% participating in outdoor activities. For low-income urban students, who have fewer opportunities to get outdoors, this disparity is even greater. TLC aims at getting these teens outdoors and fostering a commitment to nature through on the ground conservation work.
All too often, lower-income, inner-city children find themselves with limited access to quality science education. Audubon Arizona and the Nina Mason Pulliam Rio Salado Audubon Center offers a unique chance for Phoenix youth to connect to the amazingly diverse Sonoran Desert. As urban areas continue to expand, their residents become increasingly disconnected from the natural world. For this reason, youngsters growing up in low-income inner-city neighborhoods are even less likely to spend time exploring nature. This trend underlines a worrisome future for conservation and the sustainability of Arizona's cities and natural spaces. It is programs like those offered by Audubon connecting urban youth to nature through meaningful conservation work, that are critical in reversing this trend and ensuring a positive future for our environment.
Connecting kids to their natural surrounding promotes a feeling of stewardship that will stay with them through adulthood. Through Audubon’s education programs, students learn critical scientific inquiry skills and substantive science content in an exciting and relevant setting in their own community. Providing diverse, urban, underserved students the opportunity to learn about and appreciate their natural world builds a community of conservation-minded youth in areas that need them most. The work provided by these students will leave a lasting impact on Phoenix's landscape - giving future generations of students a place to explore nature in their own neighborhood.
