About the Program

AmeriCorps is a national community service program that supports civic engagement, focuses on increasing awareness of community issues, and rewards participants contributing significant amounts of service with Education Awards to pursue their educational goals.

As a Teachers College AmeriCorps member, you will:

  • Address common educational challenges affecting students at Title I schools and students with special needs.
  • Earn a Segal AmeriCorps Education Award, which may be used to pay college costs or repay student loans

About the Segal AmeriCorps Education Award

Depending on your student teaching schedule and eligible placements, you may be eligible for:

  • $1212 for a 300 hour term
  • $1515 for a 450 hour term

Members may earn multiple Awards; eligibility depends on cohort/site placement, rotations, and timely paperwork completion. Once you have completed the term of service, your Award voucher is available online within 2-4 weeks of exit date.

There are a limited number of awards and enrollment in the program will be based on a first come first serve basis. The AmeriCorps office will only accept complete application forms.

With your Education Award you can:

  • Repay qualified student loans like Stafford, Perkins, and/or Federal Direct Loans
  • Pay for current educational expenses
  • Hold the voucher for up to seven years for future education costs, such as continuing education courses, endorsement, or graduate school

Eligibility Requirements

  • Be in the Teachers College Student Teaching Program
  • Be a US citizen or permanent resident
  • Be at least 17 years or older
  • Pass a criminal history check
  • Meet at least one of the following conditions:
    • Serve at a Title I school
    • Major in Special Education
  • Complete your entire term of service with the same group of K-12 students.
      

Participation Requirements

Participating in the AmeriCorps program is easy:

  • request an AmeriCorps eligible placement
  • complete the Enrollment paperwork
  • submit monthly Time Logs online
  • complete three AmeriCorps trainings and submit reflections
  • fill out an Exit Survey once you have completed your required service hours
  • no additional service hours are required after hours are completed
      

How to Apply

Attend an ORIENTATION SESSION at the beginning of your student-teaching, at which you will complete enrollment forms.

  • If you are a teacher candidate in a YEAR-LONG student teaching program, AmeriCorps representatives will visit your cohort, to conduct this Orientation Session.
  • If you are a teacher candidate in a SEMESTER-LONG student teaching program, one in-person Orientation Session will be held the morning of your Student Teaching Orientation.
  • An ONLINE orientation session is also available.

Applicants must provide copies of all documents in either Group A or Group B when submitting application:

  • Passport
Group B Documents
  • Fingerprint Clearance Card
  • Social Security Card
  • Birth Certificate or Permanent Resident Card
  • Driver’s License or state ID card

The AmeriCorps office will only accept COMPLETE application forms.
